Volunteer Frequently-Asked Questions
We hope the following FAQs and answers will help you in your decision to become a Unity volunteer.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 920.338.1111 or 800.990.9249
.

Q: Is there a minimum amount of hours I will be required to volunteer?
Volunteer opportunities are available for whatever time commitment you are willing to give, and our Volunteer Coordinators can help you identify a role that would best fit your schedule.  We require one hour a year, plus keeping current with required forms, to remain an active volunteer.

Q: How many volunteer hours does Unity need each year?
Hospice care regulations require that 5% of all patient care hours be fulfilled by volunteers.  We would not be able to provide all that we do for our community if it weren't for our volunteer support.  As Unity continues to care for more patients, we are always in need of volunteers in patient care, bereavement support, creative projects, outreach, and campus and office support, at day, evening and weekend hours all year round and throughout our Northeast Wisconsin service area.

Q: What type of training is provided?
Training varies depending on your volunteer area of interest.  Unity provides classroom orientation, informational resources and team interaction with our current staff to ensure that all volunteers feel adequately prepared for their volunteer role.  Direct patient care volunteers receive a minimum of 16 hours of orientation, covering the history of hospice care, ethics, privacy laws, personal boundaries, etc.
All other volunteers receive a minimum of eight hours of orientation.

Q: I don't have health care experience.  Can I still volunteer?
Yes!  We offer training that will ensure you feel comfortable in any volunteer roles you wish to do, whether in direct patient care or supporting our office and other volunteer needs.

Q: Will I ever be asked to volunteer for a task that would make me uncomfortable?
No.  You decide how you want to be involved as a volunteer.  We will never ask you to do anything you do not want to do, and you can always say "no" to any volunteer opportunity that does not interest you.  Your personal preferences determine your role as a Unity volunteer―including what you want to do, when you are available and how often you want to help.

Q: What are the requirements of being a volunteer?
Unity has opportunities available for all ages.  All volunteers must complete an application, brief interview, background check and volunteer orientation, as well as sign a HIPAA agreement to protect patient privacy.  A Volunteer Coordinator will help match you to the role(s) that best suits your interest.

Q: Where are volunteers needed?
Unity needs volunteers throughout our 12-county service area in Northeast Wisconsin.  Click on the map image at right to view a list of communities in our service area.
